How to Configure Extension Mobility for Users?

First, let’s explain what the Cisco Extension Mobility feature is. Cisco Extension Mobility is a feature that when enabled will allow users to access their Cisco IP phone settings, e.g. their extension, voicemail, etc…, from another Cisco IP phone. This feature is extremely useful if you have users that are constantly moving or switching in between offices or cubicles. If configured correctly, all the user needs to do is log into the phone with their given credential (UserID and PIN) and will be able to have their phone profile shows up and ready to be used.

Step 1: Verify if the Cisco Extension Mobility Service is running

– Log into the “Unified CallManager Serviceability” section.
* If you do not know the URL to this, you can browse to the “Unified CallManager Administration” link and go into it from the drop down on the top-right hand side of the page.
– Click the “Tools” menu and choose “Control Center – Feature Services
– In the “Select Server” page, select a server and press the “Go” button.
– Scroll and Search for the “Cisco Extension Mobility” line – Make sure that it is Started and Activated.
* If service is not started or activated, you can select the “Cisco Extension Mobility” line and click on the Play button to start the service.

Step 2: Add the Extension Mobility Service to Unified CallManager

– Log into the “Unified CallManager Administration” page
– Click “Device” from the menu
– Choose “Device Settings” then “Phone Services” from the menu
– Click the “Find” button and check if any previous Extension Mobility service been created.
– If none, click on the “Add New” button
– For Service Name, ASCII Service Name, and Service Description – enter “Still in the “Unified CallManager Administration” page”
– For Service URL – enter the following:
http://YourCallManagerIPAddress:8080/emapp/EMAppServlet?device=#DEVICENAME#&EMCC=#EMCC#
– For Secure Service URL – enter the following:
https://YourCallManagerIPAddress:8443/emapp/EMAppServlet?device=#DEVICENAME#&EMCC=#EMCC#
– For Service Category – use XML Service
– For Service Type – use Standard IP Phone Service
– Check the “Enable” check box
– Click “Save” to save the configuration

Step 3: Customize Extension Mobility Parameters

– Still in the “Unified CallManager Administration” page
– Click “System
– Choose “Service Parameters
– Select a server
– Select the “Cisco Extension Mobility” service
– Review all the parameters in the “Cisco Extension Mobility (Active) Parameters…” section
* Note: Make sure to change the “Alphanumeric User ID” to TRUE if userID have letters in them.

Step 4: Creating Device Profile for Users
* Note: This is the profile that will show up on others Cisco phone if logged in.

– Still in the “Unified CallManager Administration” page
– Click “Device
– Choose “Device Settings” then “Device Profile
– Click the “Add New” button
– Enter in a name for this profile. You can use something like “usernameEM“.
* Note: If your CallManager is setup to sync with Active Directory. UserIDs are populated when an account is created in AD.
– Follow the same steps on how to add a physical phone into the system
– When you have finished creating the new device profile, click on it
– In the “Device Profile Configuration” page and on the “Association Info” section – Click on the “Line [1]” line
– Enter the user’s extension that you want to associate this device profile to
– Go back to the “Device Profile Configuration” page and on the “Related Links” section – Choose the “Subscribe/Unsubscribe Services” option and press “Go”
– Select the “Extension Mobility” service from the drop down
– Click “Next
– Click “Subscribe” to add the service to this device profile

Step 5: Adding Device Profile to User Profile

– Still in the “Unified CallManager Administration” page
– Click “User Management”
– Choose “End Users”
– Find the user profile that you want to associate the above device profile with
– Click on the username
– In the “End User Configuration” page and in the “Extension Mobility” section, double click on the device profile that you created previously
– Check the “Allow Control of Device from CTI”
– Every thing else can be left in default settings
– Click “Save”

Step 6: Adding Extension Mobility service to Phones
Note: You would need to repeat this to any phone that you want to have this feature

– Still in the “Unified CallManager Administration” page
– Click “Device
– Choose “Phone
– Select a phone that you want to have this feature enabled
Note: You can use the “Bulk Administration” feature to enable all phones with the Extension Mobility service.
– Go to the “Related Links” section on the Top-Right and Choose the “Subscribe/Unsubscribe Services” option and press “Go”
– Select the “Extension Mobility” service from the drop down
– Click “Next
– Click “Subscribe” to add the service to this device profile
– In the “Phone Configuration” page, scroll down to the “Extension Information” section and check the “Enable Extension Mobility” option.
– Click “Save

Step 7: Testing the Extension Mobility feature on a Cisco IP Phone
Note: Note all Cisco phones support this feature. Check your phone manual for more information.

– Press the “Services” button
– Use the “Up/Down” arrow to scroll to the “Extension Mobility” service that were create from Step 1
– At the log in prompt, enter in the UserID and PIN
– If logged in successfully, you would see the phone display changed the phone settings
– Press the “Services” button again for option to Log out and to change the PIN

Step 8: Training Users on how to Log in and Log out

  2. Hi great topic, really helped out in configuring the EM service for my system.

    EM is now being used for a couple of months within the organization but I get a lot of employees at the helpdesk that they forgot their PIN.

    also users forget to login and therefore are not reachable.
    and it seems a security risk because the PIN is the same for all users, they just do not change it.

    we also have an ActiveDirectory integrated UC and users need to enter their e-mail address as the userid, this is big user problem.

    is there a application available so users can login the phone with their PC?
